Description

Magill Estate by Penfolds was born in one of South Australia's most iconic vineyards. A place steeped in history, it is one of the few urban wineries in the world and the birthplace of the legendary Penfolds Grange. The terroir of Magill Estate is characterised by complex soils, with a composition of clay and rocky soils that allow Shiraz vines to thrive, expressing their full potential. The region's Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters, favours optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines of great concentration and complexity. 100% Shiraz, this noble French grape variety has found a second home in Australia and is known for its ability to express a wide range of aromas and flavours, strongly influenced by its terroir. At Magill Estate, the vines are grown using traditional and sustainable methods, ensuring excellent grape quality and a deep respect for the environment. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in small batches to maintain the integrity and purity of the fruit. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in 300 litre French and American oak barrels. This adds complexity and depth to the wine, delicately integrating the wood notes with the fruity and spicy profile of the Shiraz. Deep red in colour, the nose offers a complex bouquet with floral hints of lavender, black fruit cake, spices and herbs, plus the inevitable slight hint of oak. In the mouth, then, it is a symphony of flavours ranging from raspberry, plum and black cherry to anise, chocolate fondue and ginger. The acidity is lively and the tannins are well evident. The finish is long and pleasant, with nuances of cola, vanillin and malt from the oak. A versatile and sophisticated wine, it pairs well with red meats, such as a beef fillet or roast lamb with herbs. For those with a sweet tooth, it can also be served with a dark chocolate cake or a cherry dessert.
